Sri Lanka 10 Day Itinerary: A Private Driver Route

Sri Lanka Tour Planner TeamOctober 14, 20269 min read

Last updated: 14 October 2026. Driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather and road works.

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka? Yes, if you pick your regions. Ten days is long enough to see the ancient cities, ride a train through tea country and finish on the south coast, as long as you do not try to fit in everything. This route starts in the Cultural Triangle, climbs to Kandy and the Hill Country, then drops to the south coast, with a private driver handling every transfer.

The Route at a Glance

Ten days, three regions: fly in and head north to Sigiriya and Dambulla, then travel to Kandy and up into tea country and Ella, then finish with a safari, a night or two on the coast and Galle Fort before departure.

Days 1 to 3: Arrival and the Cultural Triangle

Day 1. Your driver meets you at Colombo airport and takes you north to Sigiriya. The drive takes around four to four and a half hours, so keep the rest of the day free. Settle in, have dinner and sleep early.

Day 2. Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress early, before the heat and the crowds, or choose neighbouring Pidurangala for a sunrise view of Sigiriya itself. In the afternoon visit the Dambulla cave temple, with its painted caves and golden Buddhas.

Day 3. Drive to Kandy, around two and a half to three hours, with stops for a spice garden or a village lunch along the way. This region has far more to offer than a short trip can cover, so see our Cultural Triangle guide if you want Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura to be part of the plan.

Days 4 to 6: Kandy and the Hill Country

Day 4. Spend a slower day in Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, walk around the lake and see the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. Evening cultural dance performances are an option.

Day 5. Head up into tea country towards Nuwara Eliya, around three to four hours depending on traffic and stops. Visit a tea factory, a waterfall or two and enjoy the cool air in this former colonial hill station.

Day 6. Take the famous train from the hill country to Ella, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, then see the Nine Arch Bridge. Your driver can meet you at the other end with your luggage. Tickets for popular classes sell out in advance, so we arrange them early. Read more in our Tea Country guide.

Days 7 to 10: South Coast, Galle and Departure

Day 7. Start with a short sunrise walk up Little Adam's Peak, then drive south, around four and a half to five and a half hours with stops. An afternoon safari at Udawalawe is a great way to break the journey and a reliable place to see elephants. Our wildlife safari guide compares Udawalawe and Yala and explains what to expect.

Day 8. A beach day on the south coast. If you travel between November and April, whale watching out of Mirissa is possible, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Day 9. Explore Galle Fort, with its ramparts, boutiques and cafes, and finish with sunset on the walls. Unawatuna is nearby for a final swim. For quieter bays, see our guide to hidden beaches.

Day 10. Transfer to Colombo airport, around two to two and a half hours using the expressway. Leave plenty of time before an international flight.

Driving Times and Why a Driver Suits This Route

This route involves roughly 20 to 25 hours of driving over ten days, spread across long and short days. Roads in the Hill Country are winding and slow, and public transport between these stops would add many hours of waiting, changing and carrying bags. A private driver means door-to-door transfers, stops where you like and flexibility if the weather changes. Our guide to getting around without a tour group explains the benefits in more detail.

What to Cut for 6 Days and What to Add for 14

With 6 days, drop the south coast and keep the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and one night in the Hill Country, or choose the beach and skip the north. Our 6 day Highlights Escape shows how this works.

With 14 days, add Polonnaruwa, a second night in Ella and a full-day safari at Yala, plus extra beach time on the south or east coast. Our 14 day Ultimate Explorer is a ready-made version.

How to Adjust the Route by Month and Interest

  • November to April: the south and west coasts are at their best, so this route works as written.
  • May to September: the south coast can be rough and wet, so consider replacing the beach days with the east coast around Trincomalee or Arugam Bay.
  • Wildlife lovers: swap a day in Kandy for a second safari.
  • Hikers: add Horton Plains or Adam's Peak in the Hill Country.
  • Families: shorten the drives by spending two nights in each region, and cut one stop.

Seasons shift, so read our guide to the best time to visit Sri Lanka before choosing your dates. And make sure your ETA is approved before you fly. If this is your first visit, our first-timer travel tips cover the practicalities.

Common Questions

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Ten days comfortably covers the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the Hill Country and the south coast with a driver, as long as you accept that you will return for the rest.

How do I spend 10 days in Sri Lanka?

Split them across three regions: three days in the Cultural Triangle, three in Kandy and the Hill Country, and four on the south coast including departure.

The best itinerary is the one with room to breathe. Ten days is enough to feel Sri Lanka, not to tick it off.
